After Ibu Yuliana photocopies the diary, she walks us back to the scooter. At the bottom of the stairs she stops and clutches the copy to her chest. “Thank you for bringing this to me. She’s very clever finding a way to get this out. I’ll make sure the police know and do everything I can. Promise me you’ll stop investigating this. It’s too dangerous. Leave it with me.”

I hesitate, but her eyes are determined. She’s not going to forget Devi. “We will,” I say.

She nods. “Safe travels.”

I slide my helmet on and Michael starts the engine.

He yells goodbye over the engine noise. We wave and take off. Over my shoulder I see Yuliana watching us, her face fierce.

I prise Devi’s photo out of my pocket and study it. Devi’s a real girl, she’s not some ghost in a diary. This is her school, this is her teacher and those girls walking by in uniforms could be her friends. It’s not the best shot, it’s taken from a group photo, but Devi’s wide smile and girlish ponytail hurt me all the same. I pull my visor down, and start to cry.
